Cyberbullies do not have to be strong or fast; they just need access to a cell phone or computer and a desire to terrorize. Cyberbullying can be worse than ‘ordinary bullying’ because even when the child comes home, even when the child shuts the door, even when the child is physically alone, it can still exist. It may not leave visible marks, but it doesn’t mean it should be dismissed. Words wound. And the pain that words can cause often pierces much deeper than the pain of physical bullying.

One cyberbullying attitude measure used asks people the valence of several cyberbullying behaviors. Valence, as used in psychology, especially in discussing emotions, means the intrinsic attractiveness (positive valence) or aversiveness (negative valence) of an event, object, or situation. Interestingly, the bystander actions most likely helped to lead to positive outcomes for targeted youth due to acts of support and encouragement that were given to the victims.
